Father George L. Willard, formerly of Milwaukee. Father Willard was born a Protestant, but became converted to the Catholic faith. He was pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic church, at Fond du Lac, prior to 1878. In that year he and E.A. Bray purchased the Catholic Citizen, then the Vindicator, from Dr. Nolan. He served as pastor of St. Patrick's church at Milwaukee, between 1878 and 1880. He was vicar-general of Dakota, under Bishop Marty, from 1880 to 1888. In the latter year he became secretary of Catholic Indian Bureau at Washington, and was serving in that capacity at the time of his death. His mission to California was the building of an Indian school at Banning.
