BRIGGS, farmer and miner, Sec. 12; P. O. Rockville; born at Waterloo, Monroe Co., Ill., June 3,1838. Son of Maquis D. and Mary D. (Gillman) Briggs; came to Grant Co. with parents at two months of age. In March, 1854, went to Eldorado Co., Cal.; followed mining three years with indifferent success; returned to California three years later, and remained seven years mining, with good luck. Married July 3,1858, by James Seaton, Esq., of Potosi, to Orilla, daughter of James and Emily (Clark) Jackson; she was born Feb. 17, 1842. Had no children, but has adopted several. Owns 40 acres of land.
