A requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Prucha, and at the conclusion thereof the funeral cortege wended its way to the Catholic cemetery on the hill and the last that was mortal of the dear girl was consigned to the grave by the side of her grandmother. The active pall bearers were Otto Schaal, Virgil Kelley, Geo; Ames, Carl Schumacher, Clarence Zenz and Celestin Kaltenbach. Honorary pall bearers were Gertrude Bazinett, Mary Kelley, Clara Runkel, Emily Phillips, Mary McLaughlin and Viola Stoll. Four young ladies attired in spotless white acted as flower bearers. They were Ottila Patzner, Mathilda Milke, Gertrude Doser and Irene Millan. The floral offerings were in great profusion and were beautiful and costly ones. Hildegarde was born in the town of Potosi June 7th 1897 and died at Mercy hospital in Chicago, March 31, 1917 aged 19 years, 7 months and 24 days. She was the daughter of Geo. K and Mathilda Doser Schumacher. Her mother died July 29th 1897, leaving her seven months old infant to the tender care of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Doser, who took every possible care of her, giving her a good Christian training and high school education. She continued living with the grand parents until the death of the grandmother Jan. 13, 1916, after which she made her home with her aunts, Mrs. Veva Kirgues and Miss Mary Doser. She graduated from the Potosi high school June2, 1916. After graduation she became imbued with the desire to become a trained nurse. She made application to the Mercy hospital training school for nurses in Chicago, July 8th, 1916, presenting a number of high class recommendations. She was admitted and on the 26th day of August she left for Chicago to enter the hospital as a student. She made great progress with her studies and was elated in her work, and was happily looking forward to the time when she would be a graduate nurse. She submitted to an operation for appendicitis at the hospital March 15, which was considered a successful one and Hilda was making preparations to spend her Easter in Potosi while regaining her lost strength, but such was not to be. An obstruction of the bowels set in and her physician advised another operation as the means of saving her life and the operation was performed Saturday March 31 which was considered a unsuccessful one. She rallied only to realize that her condition was serious. She passed away the same evening at 7:25 o’clock comforted with all the rights of the church. Her remains arrived in Potosi Sunday, April 1, and were taken to the home of her father. Hilda was a bright and beautiful girl and was endowed with all the principles of true ladyship. She was of a cheerful disposition and her familiar countenance and happy smile will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her. That she was held in high esteem by the sisters of Mercy hospital is evidenced by the letter appended hereto addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Schumacher. Mercy Hospital, April 2, 1917 Dear Friends; I wish to express to you and the family of our dear Miss Schumacher the most sincere sympathy of the sisters and nurses of Mercy hospital in the sad passing away of your daughter and our beloved companion and friend. We have all grown to love her during her short stay in our family. Her sweet, gentle affectionate personality will be greatly missed. She was most unselfish, always ready to help others by her words, actions and good example. We had a high requiem mass for her this morning and all the sisters and nurses went to Holy Communion for her. She was a lovely soul and we feel sure that our dear Lord wanted her for His very own, and that she is happy with Him in heaven. We shall pray for her and also for her dear parent and family that our dearest Lord will give to eternal rest and to you the grace to bear Patiently this great cross. In loving sympathy, Sister Mary Veronica CARD OF THANKS We desire to express our sincere thanks to out neighbors and friends for their kind assistance in the death of our beloved daughter and niece, Hildegarde Schumacher, and for the beautiful floral offerings. George Schumacher and family and Doser families.
