Holmes, who has for three months past, being living with his son here, Mr. V. C. Holmes, for medical treatment, died very suddenly Friday morning at the age of 68 years. Mr. Holmes' complaint was dropsy and was being treated by Dr. C. M. Smith, but his case seemed to be obstinate and the doctor could make but little progress towards restoration. On Friday morning he arose and ate his breakfast apparently as well as usual, and was dressed by a slight assistance from his son, when all at once he seemed to lose consciousness, sank back and was no more. The immediate cause of his death was supposed to have been dropsy of the heart. Mr. Holmes' residence was some 2 1/2 miles east of Albany on a farm where he had lived for nearly thirty years, being an early settler of that town. His remains were taken to his old home near Albany Monday morning where funeral services were held. Mr. Holmes was born in Petersburg, Rensellaer Co., N. Y., Dec. 10, 1820, came to Wisconsin in 1844 and settled on the farm he owned at the time of his death, and which he held the Government patent for. He leaves a wife, three sons and one daughter. His death took place Friday, January 27, 1888. January 31, 1888, Evansville Review, Evansville, Wisconsin
