The reason for the accident is not fully understood. There were no broken beams or planks. The ridge beams at the top of the bridge were never connected across, and it is thought that the planks buckled under the heavy load. The engine was being used to haul a truck on which was loaded all the timbers belonging to a portable house which was used by a road construction crew. Behind this truck was attached a cook's shanty. The road winds considerably just before it reaches the bridge, and it is understood that in the endeavor to keep the train in the road the engine slewed against the side of the bridge. In endeavoring to pry it away from this, they probably loosened the bridge planks until they slipped from their place. The engine was dumped head-first into the water. Neither the truck nor the shanty were ditched. Price was caught under the rear of the engine, directly across the lower part of his body, and was held under the water until he drowned. Harvey was thrown into the water. Flora escaped with a severe scare and a few bruises. July 16, 1914, Evansville Review, p. 1, col. 1, Evansville, Wisconsin
