Symbols: two acorns under oak branches Size of Stone: 63 3/8 x 24 3/8 x 24 3/4 inches Location in Cemetery: inside iron gate Additional Comments: Located on a hill surrounded by large trees, mostly maple. The cemetery is occasionally mowed, many of the stones are standing, a few are not. The cemetery is now closed to burials, the last was in 1962 (Dr. David Cole who purchased some of the Craig farm land). The private cemetery is surrounded by farm land and nearby Mitchell's Glen (held by a private conservancy group). The Mitchell Farm, and then known as the Craig Farm, is the site of this cemetery. It was purchased by Archibald and Laura Burlingame Mitchell in 1861. The land was then inherited by Luella Mitchell Craig, and later by Hal D. Craig. Luella was the youngest of 12 children. Her brother, S.D. Mitchell turned the Mitchell's Glen property into a business attracting tourists to his museum of Indian and pioneer relics, and offered views and picnics in the glen. The cemetery site was chosen by Archie Nitchell. He asked to be buried under the old red oak tree at the top of the hill. He like to sit under it and watch the squirrels. In 1876 his request was granted. (From "Green Lake Memories", as told by Hal D. Craig, his grandson, in 1954.) The old tree was alive and well in 1954, but has since been cut, its stump still standing. His wife, Laura, and six of the 12 children are also buried here. The cemetery became public in 1890, so there are about 30 people buried there.
