Special: Auxiliary honors mother 50 years after sacrifice By Richard Ousky, Editor, Lake City Graphic. When Chuck Sanborn prepared to go overseas in 1943, he got a 20 percent pay raise from his employer, the U.S. Army. He decided to keep $20 of his $45 pay check for spending money, though he didn't know what he would spend it on. He would send $25 a month back home. "If you put it in the bank, I'll have a pretty neat nest egg when I get home," he wrote his mother. "But if you need it, don't be afraid to spend it." "He never got the money," his mother, Ellen Sanborn, said this week. Chuck joined the Army Rangers in December. On Jan. 22, 1944, he was killed in action at Anjiou Beach in Italy. His mother joined the local chapter of the Gold Star Mothers. There were about 12 mothers and wives of men killed in World War II. "We got together and talked about things, and it helped," she said. She and others later started Lake City's American Legion Auxiliary. Ellen now lives at the Lake City Nursing Home where she was honored on Veteran's Day by the auxiliary's District President, Marie Goede of Plainview, as a 50-year member of the auxiliary. She is Lake City's last living Gold Star Mother. Ellen said her son wanted to quit high school to join the Army when the U.S. became involved in the war. "I wanted him to finish high school," she said. She talked to Milton Boock, then the principal at Lincoln High School who convinced Chuck to stay in school and graduate. After high school he went to work on a new ammunitions plant in Baraboo, Wis. There, he met another young man. The two of them decided to enlist together. Once in the military, he volunteered for the Rangers. On Dec. 22, 1943, he left for Italy. "We didn't see him again after that," Ellen said. Harold Charles Sanborn is buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetary. For years Ellen and her husband took flowers to his grave frequently. While she is no longer able to do that, other members of the family continue to. "It was a big sacifice for him, and it was a big sacifice for me," she said. "I sacrificed him. It's the worst thing that could have happened." (End of story).
