Recorder and Assistant United States Lake Survey seasons of 1874-77. Assistant in Observatory of the University of Michigan, 1878. Assistant engineer, United States Improvement of the Mississippi River, 1879. Assistant in Washburn Observatory, University of Wisconsin, 1880-83. Graduated from Law School, University of Wisconsin, 1883. Computer, Nautical Almanac Office, Washington, 1883-84. Astronomer, Washburn Observatory, 1884-85. Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy, Ohio State University, 1885-87. Professor of Astronomy, University of Wisconsin and Associate Director Washburn Observatory, 1887. Director Washburn Observatory, 1889. Visited the principal European observatories, 1890 and 1894. Published five volumes of Publications of the Washburn Observatory. Method of Least Squares, 1889.
