In 1894 he was elected to the Fifty-fourth Congress, receiving 21,972 votes, against 12, --- for Andrew Kull, democrat; 2,828 for Hamilton Utley, people’s; and 1,615 for A. S. Kaye, prohibitionist. In 1896 he was elected to the Fifty- fifth Congress receiving 28,235 votes, against 14,723 for Jeremiah L. Mahoney, democrat, and 84 for George W. White, prohibitionist.
