They are chosen biennially and receive $500 for their service during the term. The Speaker Is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as Speaker. The Assembly of 1901 contains 82 Republicans and 18 Democrats. JUNEAU COUNTY. Population, 1900-20,629. (Unchanged. by apportionment of 1901.) JOHN M. BARLOW (Rep.), of New Lisbon, was born May 17, 1833, in the town of Lee, Berkshire county, Mass., and received a common school and academic education. He came west in 1851 to East Troy, Walworth county, clerking in a mercantile house six years, after which he resided in Medina, N. Y., and Mukwonago, Wis. From there he went to New Lisbon in 1870, where he engaged in the mercantile business. He has been trustee and village president of New Lisbon nine years and county supervisor since 1889, five years of which time he was chairman of the board. He was elected to the assembly in 1898, and was re- elected In 1900, receiving 2,848 votes to 1,667 for Charles Niller (Dem.).
