Astronomer, Washington Observatory, 1884-85. Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy, Ohio State University, 1885-87. Professor of Astronomy, University of Wisconsin, and Associate Director Washburn Observatory, 1887. Director Washburn Observatory, 1889. Member National Academy of Sciences 1899. Published five volumes of Publications of the Washburn Observatory. Method of Least Squares, 1889.
