They are chosen biennially and receive $500 for their service during the term. The Speaker Is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as Speaker. The Assembly of 1901 contains 82 Republicans and 18 Democrats. SAUK COUNTY. First District. The towns of Baraboo, Delton, Dellona, Excelsior, Fairfield, Freedom, Greenfield, Merrimac, Prairie du Sac, Sumpter, and the villages of Ableman, North Freedom, Prairie du Sac and Sauk City, and the city of Baraboo. Population in 1900-16,905. (Unchanged by apportionment of 1901.) FRANKLIN JOHNSON (Rep.), of Baraboo, was born in Greenfield, Milwaukee county, Wis., in 1849; was educated in the public schools and the home; taught school several terms. In 1881 he moved to Baraboo and engaged in fruit growing. In 1884 and 1885 lie was clerk of the town of Baraboo; was re-elected in 1892, since which time he has held the position continuously; was the originator of "Johnson’s Index system for tax collectors," in use in many counties of this state; has been secretary of Baraboo Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company for the past four years and president of the State Horticultural society for the past two years. He was elected to the assembly in 1900, receiving 2,243 votes, against 1,232 for T. W. English (Dem.), and 148 for O. E. Stone (Pro.).
