They are chosen biennially and receive $500 for their service during the term. The Speaker Is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as Speaker. KAREL (Dem.), of Milwaukee, was born in Schuyler, Neb., Feb. 28, 1873, and came to Wisconsin in 1874. He is a lawyer, educated in the ward and High schools of Kewaunee and the University of Wisconsin, graduating in the Law Course in 1895. He was one of the organizers and was vice president of the University Democratic Club, 1892 to 1895, and was sergeant-at-arms of the Democratic state convention In 1900. In his election to the assembly he received 1,591 votes, against 1,502 for Ben Van Echtern (Rep.), and 405 for John Hayman (Soc. Dem.).
