They are chosen biennially and receive $500 for their service during the term. The Speaker Is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as Speaker. The Assembly of 1901 contains 82 Republicans and 18 Democrats. LA FAYETTE COUNTY. Population, 1900-20,959. (Unchnnged by apportionment of 1901.) PHILO A. ORTON (Rep.), of Darlington, was born in Hamilton, Madison county, N. Y., receiving his education at Madison (now Colgate) University in his native city and at Beloit College. He came to Wisconsin In 1850, and settled at Beloit, where he lived five years, when he removed to his present home. He Is a lawyer; was elected district attorney of Lafayette county In 1862, and county judge in 1870; was appointed University Regent In 1874, and for over twenty years was president of the board of education of the city of Darlington. He was elected to the assembly In 1898, and re-electcd In 1900, receiving 2,863 votes, against 2,098 for Justus H. Reichers (Dem.), and 145 for Jasper Dexter (Pro.).
