They are chosen biennially and receive $500 for their service during the term. The Speaker Is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as Speaker. The Assembly of 1901 contains 82 Republicans and 18 Democrats. ROCK COUNTY. First District. The towns of Janesville, La Prairie and Rock, and the city of Janesville. Population in 1900-16,218. (District changed. See new apportionment, following biographies.) CHARLES L. VALENTINE (Rep.), of Janesville, was born in Genesee county, N. Y., Oct., 1846, came to Wisconsin in 1849 and was educated in the Janesville schools. He is an abstracter of titles, was register of deeds for Rock county twenty years, 1875 to 1895, and secretary of the Wisconsin Commission of Fisheries fourteen years. He was a member of Co. L, Fifth Wisconsin Inf. in the war of the Rebellion and lost his right foot in the battle at Spottsylvania C. H., Va., May 12, 1864. He was elected to the assembly in 1900 by 2,064 votes to 1,350 for William Brinkman (Dem.), and 93 for W. J. Knights (Pro.).
