CHARLES RICHARD VAN HISE, Ph. D., LL. D., President of the University,
was born May 29, 1857, at Fulton, Wisconsin. He graduated from the
University of Wisconsin in 1879, with the degree of Bachelor of
Metallurgical Engineering. Since that time from the University he has
received the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in 1880; Master of
Science in 1882; and Doctor of Philosophy in 1892. He has received the
honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Chicago, in
1903, and from Yale University in 1904. Immediately after graduating
in 1879 he entered the instructional force of the University of
Wisconsin and has remained on its staff in various positions to the
present time. In the University he has been instructor in metallurgy,
1886-88; professor of mineralogy and petrology, 1888-90; professor of
Archaen and applied geology, 1890-92; professor of geology, 1892-1903;
and he was elected President of the University in 1903. At the
University of Chicago he was non-resident professor of structural and
metamorphic geology from its foundation to 1903. He has held various
positions on the United States Geological Survey from 1883 to the
present time. Under this organization he was assistant geologist on
the United States Geological Survey 1883-1888; geologist in charge of
Lake Superior Division, 1888-1900; and he has been geologist in charge
of pre-Cambrian and metamorphic geology, 1900 to the present time. For
the state Geological and Natural History Survey he was consulting
geologist from 1897 to 1903. Since 1903 he has been president of the
Board of Commissioners of the Survey. He was president of the
Wisconsin Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, 1893- 96; and vice
prescient of Section E of the American Association for the Advancement
of Sciences, 1901. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences;
the Washington Academy of Science; the Geological Society of America;
the American Institute of Mining Engineers; the Scientific Society of
Christiana [Christiania], Norway; the Boston Society of Natural
History. He has been editor (for structural geology) of the Journal of
Geology since 1892. He has made many contributions to geological
literature, of which the more important are: the Archaen and
Algonkian, the Penokee Iron-bearing Series of Michigan and Wisconsin
(with R. D. Irving), Principles of North American Pre-Cambrian
Geology, the Marquette Iron-bearing District of Michigan (with W. S.
Bayley), the Iron Ores of the Lake Superior region. President Van Hise
has also given various addresses upon educational subjects.
