D. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. THE WISCONSIN LEGISLATURE. ASSEMBLY. L. H. BANCROFT, Speaker; O. E. SHAFFER, Chief Clerk; W. S. IRVINE, Sergeant-at-Arms. The assembly consists of 100 members. They are chosen biennally and receive $500 for their services during the term. The speaker is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as speaker. The assembly of 1909 contains 76 republicans, 19 democrats, and 5 social democrats. PORTAGE COUNTY. One District. Population, 1900—29,483. O. A. CROWELL, (Rep.) was born in Almond, Portage county, Wisconsin, October 5th, 1872. Attended the village school until 1899, then two years at the University of Wisconsin until the death of his father. Has been in the general store business and farming since that time; organized the Portage County Bank in 1901 and has been president of the same since its organization. Was postmaster from 1896 to 1901 and has been president of the village since its incorporation in 1905.
