D. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. THE WISCONSIN LEGISLATURE. ASSEMBLY. L. H. BANCROFT, Speaker; O. E. SHAFFER, Chief Clerk; W. S. IRVINE, Sergeant-at-Arms. The assembly consists of 100 members. They are chosen biennally and receive $500 for their services during the term. The speaker is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as speaker. The assembly of 1909 contains 76 republicans, 19 democrats, and 5 social democrats. BURNETT AND POLK COUNTIES. One District. Population, 1900—85,279. AXEL JOHNSON (Rep.) was born in Denmark in 1870; received a common school education in Denmark and America; studied agriculture and worked on dairy farms in Minnesota for some time, then went to Colorado and Wyoming for two years. He came to Polk county, Wisconsin, in 1892, bought the farm upon which he now lives and has been engaged in dairying and stock-raising since. He has served his town as clerk for six years, has been a school director for many years, is also a director of the Polk County Mercantile Company, a very large mercantile establishment on the co-operative plan, and has been secretary and manager of the Apple River and Beaver Creamery Company for six years. He was elected to the assembly in 1908, receiving 4,155 votes against 924 for P. A. Partlow (Dem.). Additional Comments: Beck, J. D. . The Blue Book of the State of Wisconsin.
