D. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. THE WISCONSIN LEGISLATURE. ASSEMBLY. L. H. BANCROFT, Speaker; O. E. SHAFFER, Chief Clerk; W. S. IRVINE, Sergeant-at-Arms. The assembly consists of 100 members. They are chosen biennally and receive $500 for their services during the term. The speaker is chosen by the members and receives an additional $500 for his services as speaker. The assembly of 1909 contains 76 republicans, 19 democrats, and 5 social democrats. MONROE COUNTY, One District. Population, 1900—83,108. JOHN R. JONES (Rep.) was born at Pittsburg, Pa., in the year 1850, of Welsh parentage. Came west with his parents in 1856, and settled on a farm in the town of Leon, Monroe county, Wisconsin. Received a common and high school education. Is by occupation a farmer. Held various offices in his town, and was chairman eleven years. Was twice elected chairman of the county board, and one term chairman of the Republican county committee of his county. He was elected to the assembly in 1906 and re-elected in 1908, receiving 3,836 votes against 2,045 for John Cremer (Dem.), and 89 for A. W. Brey (Soc. Dem.). Additional Comments: Beck, J. D. .
