MEMBERS OF SENATE FIRST SENATORIAL DISTRICT Manitowoc, Kewaunee and Door counties. JOHN E. CASHMAN (Rep.) is a farmer. He was born, fifty-six years ago in the town of Franklin, Kewaunee county. The state senatorship, to which he was elected in the fall of 1922, is the first political office he has ever held or sought. Besides much home study and careful reading, he received a common school education, a term at Valparaiso University, Ind., and two years evening sessions at the Chicago Law school, where he was president of his class and winner of the gold medal of the institution in 1904. Prior to this he had taught school several years; then took the United States Competitive Civil Service examination, and standing at the top of the list of competitors, was appointed first to a position in the U. S. Government Meat Inspection Service in 1901 at Chicago, and then as the result of another civil service examination was promoted to a responsible position in the U. S. Internal Revenue Service in Chicago. He held, this position for many years until circumstances at home required his return to the farm, which he had continued to hold during this time. His specialty is farming, owning and operating at present two eighty-acre farms near Denmark, Wis. , He is a Progressive Republican and a staunch supporter of Senator LaFollette.
