At Platteville, Iowa Series 24 Case Or File # Written: January 13, 1863 Iowa County, Town of Dodgeville “To John Cornish, William Kneebone, John McAllister, John Sampson, and Jonathan Smith [These are the men whose farms surrounded GEORGE BUNTING’s farm]: You are hereby required to appear before the undersigned, one of the justices of the Peace in and for said county at my office in said town, forthwith, to give evidence in a certain cause, then and there to be tried between William H. Bartle, plaintiff, and GEORGE BUNTING, defendant, on the part of the plaintiff. Given under my hand this 13th day of January 1863. James Jones, Justice of the Peace.” State of Wisconsin, County of Iowa To the sheriff or any constable: Whereas William Henry Bartle has this day complained in writing to me on oath that GEORGE BUNTING did, on or about the 8th day of January 1863, at the town of Dodgeville in said county, willfully and maliciously maim, disfigure, injure and cut away the testicles of one boar pig, of the value of $5, the same being the private property of the said William H. Bartle against the form of the statute in such cases made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the state of Wisconsin, and he prays that the said GEORGE BUNTING might be arrested and dealt with according to law; Now therefore, you are hereby commanded forthwith to apprehend the said GEORGE BUNTING and bring him before me to be dealt with. [Photocopy left out the next lines.] State of Wisconsin vs. GEORGE BUNTING, criminal action “On complaint being made by William Henry Bartle, on oath against GEORGE BUNTING, a warrant was issued to E. H. Noyes, constable, who brought the accused before the court this 13th day of January 1863. On complaint being read to the accused, he, the accused plead guilty to the offence as charged in the complaint. The court then adjudged that he, George Bunting give bonds to the State of Wisconsin to the amount of $100 for his appearance at the next term of Iowa County Circuit Court.” “Bond produced and accepted by me.” James Jones, Justice of the Peace Iowa County We, GEORGE BUNTING, as principal and John Simpson [John Simpson is his son-in-law] as surety, acknowledge ourselves to be severally indebted to the state of Wisconsin in the penal sum of $100 to be well and truly paid if default be made in the following condition.” “The condition of this recognizance is such that if the said GEORGE BUNTING shall personally appear before the next Circuit Court in and for the said county to answer for the offence of mayhem and not to depart without the leave of said Court, then this recognizance shall be void, otherwise in full force and effect.
