Gentry?, Sheriff of the County of Iowa, state of Wisconsin, and to his successor in office in the sum of $860, and by these presents do bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators and assigns firmly, signed with our hands and seals, this 8th day of November 1839.” “Now the condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas a writ of attachment has been issued out of the District Court of the United States for the County of Iowa and Territory of Wisconsin at the suite of THOMAS J. HOLMES vs. Louis Montondo and John Bradbury and by virtue of said writ, the said sheriff has attached two wagons and four horses which said property has been valued at $430. Now if the said Bradbury and Montondo (if judgment goes against them) shall redeliver the said property to the said sheriff or his successor or the appraised value hereof in money, then this obligation to be void, otherwise in full force and virtue. John Bradbury, James Morrison, John O’Neill.” Taken in presence of John Bracken, James S. Bawden. Territory of Wisconsin, County of Iowa} “THOMAS J. HOLMES being duly sworn according to law, doth depose and say that Louis Montondo and John Bradbury are justly indebted to him in the sum of $119. That this affiant verily believes that the said Louis Montondo and John Bradbury have property in the County of Iowa which they are about, fraudulently to dispose of, so as to hinder and delay their creditors, and further saith not. THOMAS J. HOLMES [this is the first document ever found with the middle initial of ‘J’ for THOMAS HOLMES. It’s possible that this is someone else, but in 1839, there really weren’t that many people in Mineral Point!] Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 2nd day of November, 1839.
