Witnesseth that the said party of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of eight hundred dollars to her in hand paid by the party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby confessed and acknowledged, has granted, bargained, and remised, released, aliened and confirmed and by these presents unto the said party of the second part in actual possession now being, and to his heirs and assigns forever; All of a certain piece of land containing six hundred and forty acres granted to the said Marie Grignon under the treaty made with the Winebago Indians at Prairie du Chien on the first day of August, 1829, which said tract of [land] has been located in the County of Iowa and Territory of Wisconsin, as is known as Section numbered Ten [10] of Township Three North in Range One East of the Fourth Principal Meridian, or any other section of land which may be given to said Marie Grignon under the provisions of the said Treaty in lieu of the section above described; Together with all and singular the hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining and the reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders, rents, issues and profits thereof, and all the estate right, title, interest, claim, and demand whatsoever of the said party of the first part either in law or equity of, in and to the above bargained premises; To have and to hold the said section of land to the said Section [probably should have been ‘party’] of the second part, his heirs and assigns, to the only proper use and behoof of the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Marie Grignon of the first part, for her heirs, executors and administrators do grant, covenant, bargain, promise and agree to and with the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns, against all and every person or persons lawfully claiming or to claim the whole or any part of the above mentioned and described premises will forever warrant and defend. In witness whereof the said party of the first part has hereunto set her hand and seal the day and year first above written. Signed Marie [her mark] Grignon. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of H. L. Dousman, J. Brisbois. Territory of Wisconsin, County of Crawford} Be it remembered that on the 19th day of October, 1836, personally came before me, the undersigned, one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the county and territory, Marie Grignon, known to me as the person who has executed the foregoing deed of bargain and sale from her to Pierre Paquette and acknowledged the same to [be] her act and deed for the uses and purposes therein mentioned; that the consideration therein expressed has been received and that she is therewith fully contented and satisfied. I, John Green, Major in the United States Army commanding the military post at Fort Winebago and at present acting Indian Agent at Fort Winebago, do hereby certify that on this day, Marie Grignon, known to me as the person who has executed the foregoing deed of bargain and sale from her to Pierre Paquette, personally came before me and acknowledged that she had executed the said deed truly and voluntarily without any fraud, circumvention ore undue influence on the part of the Grantee or any other person and that she has received the consideration expressed in said deed, having been paid in money or its equivalent, is sufficient for the lands therein mentioned and that he said Marie Grignon has sufficient knowledge and capacity to transact business, and I do therefore recommend that the foregoing and transfer of the land therein mentioned be approved by the President of the United States.
