There were only a few sidewalks, privately built, and the town lacked equipment and organization to fight fires. Fights were common and sometimes they ended in murder. But by 1848 the shifting population of earlier years had begun to stabilize itself.” “Some signs of improvement were apparent in the small village…Men were erecting new dwellings and new business structures. In 1847 workers smelted lead at five different furnaces, and a new copper furnace began operating in the vicinity of the Point. But though prices remained high, more and more villagers were exchanging the miner’s pickax for the plow. The transition was slow but steady, for as soon as the surface veins of lead were exhausted, miners left the ore fields and started cultivating the rich soil of the area.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/wi/iowa/history/1973/frompage/mineralp37gms.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/wifiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb
