Davey Thomas from Irene Armstrong Kelly, a woman named Marcia Laughton “…remembered Grandpa Stephens so well. I don’t know whether I told you or not, but she said "I certainly remember your great grandfather very well. We used to call him 'Handsome Tom' because he was the best-looking one in the family. I can see him now, with his yellow hair and bright blue eyes. She remembered Grandpa Stephens’ father, James, too but she didn’t remember Mary Murrish, James’ wife…" From the above mentioned letter to Fred Davey, Irene said, “About Grandpa Stephens. I am glad you remember him. Lillian Pitts gave me a picture of him and Will Rose gave me one of Grandma Stephens. My grandpa William Persons told me about the ‘diggings’ that Grandpa had, that turned out so well. Will Rose said it was located at Potosi and that he sold it for the price of the blacksmith’s bill. My grandfather said Grandma Stephens used to twit him about it, because she was always sorry she ever came to this country anyway. You know she [Elizabeth Letcher Nankivel Stephens]had three sons by a former marriage, Samuel, Timothy and Henry [Nankivel].” Additional Comments: His grandson, Joseph T. Davey reported that "Tom Stephens [his grandfather] kept an old musket over his cabin door out near Mineral Point road. He was over 6 feet and very straight."
