Brigs were small sailing vessels, generally carrying only about 25 to 30 passengers in very cramped quarters. At the time of the journey, THOMAS was aged 40, and SARAH was 37, and there were 5 children in the family: John- age 11, George- 7, Samuel- 4, Alice- 3, and JANE- 1. (On the manifest, JANE is called JENNY. She is also called JENNY on her death registration.) There is some confusion concerning the birth names of one child, the one called Samuel. The passenger list calls him Thomas, but the age is the same as it would have been for Samuel. Also, another son is born later in Pennsylvania, and he is named Thomas. Perhaps the person writing the passenger manifest misunderstood when asking the names, or perhaps Samuel was his middle name. JENNY related this anecdote to her children concerning the voyage. She was a tiny baby when the Holmes family came to America. On the way, she became very ill, and they thought she was dead. The captain was ready to put her overboard when her mother begged for one more look. The baby moved a foot, and of course, was saved.
