Legate GAR Post From a book at the Mineral Point Room, in the basement of the town of Mineral Point, Wisconsin’s Public Library, called Personal War Sketches of the George H. Legate GAR Post #109. This book appears to be one of a kind, with handwritten entries. It is unlikely that there are any duplicates.: “Comrade THOMAS WARD MITCHELL, who was born the 10th day of July, 1843, in Mineral Point, county of Iowa, state of Wisconsin: “Entered service November 26, 1861 at Mazomanie, Wis. as private in Company “K”, 14th regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. First discharge October 15, 1862 at Corinth, Miss, Surgeon’s certificate of disability. First engagement was at Shiloh, April 4, 1862. Also in the battle at Iuka, Sept. 19, and at Corinth Oct. 4 & 5. Confined in regiment hospital and at Jefferson Barracks. Took part in the capture of the 6th Louisiana Battery at Shiloh, April 7, 1862 and helped to save the flag of my country.” This last sentence provides new information not found anywhere else.
