The first was filed in Placer County on July 24th, 1872, when THOMAS learned, belatedly, that his pension application had been approved in Wisconsin. The application was for "Restoration to the Rolls" and stated that "No payment was ever made on the certificate" and that he has since resided as follows: "in Colorado, Nevada and California, traveling around the mining districts", and that he has not claimed his pension previously for the following reasons: "Applied for pension at Mineral Point through Wm. T. Henry, his attorney, and soon after applying left Wisconsin for a long time, and when informed that his pension had been granted, by letter received from his mother, was also informed that he must return to Wisconsin in order to draw the money, and was too poor to return to Wisconsin." The second document is an affidavit sworn to on August 31st, 1872, by O. H. Petterton, Stating: "I hereby certify that I have examined T.W. MITCHELL aged 29, born in the State of Wisconsin, and formerly in the Army as a soldier, and find him deaf in the left ear and partially so in the right, produced by exposure, fever and improper administration of medicine (as he thinks) while in the army. The cause of deafness being, in my opinion, paralysis of the auric nerves. The said infirmity being of great detriment to the successful performance of his ______, which is that of a hydraulic miner. The loss of good hearing enhancing the danger, at times, a thousandfold."
