Mitchell, late Co. K, 14th Reg’t, Wis. Vol. Inf. Personally came before me, a notary public in and for said county and state, Jane C. [Poquette] Matthews, aged 72 years, citizen of the city of Mineral Point, County of Iowa, state of Wisconsin, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to aforesaid case as follows: “I was acquainted with Louisa J. Mitchell [she was the mother of Louisa], the 2nd wife of Thomas W. Mitchell, from her childhood to the date of her death in July 1896. I know she was never married before she was married to Thomas W. Mitchell and I know that Thomas W. Mitchell did not remarry from the date of his first wife’s death in Feb. 1883 until he married Louisa J. in Dec. 1886. I was present as midwife at the birth of five children born [1886 to 1892] to Thomas W. and Louisa Mitchell. One of them is dead, one is over 16 years of age. Fanny E. was born Sept. 22, 1887. Tillie J. was born March 18, 1889. Mary A. was born May 12, 1892. I know that these are the correct names of the children under 16 years of age, and I know they are living and under the care and keeping of their guardian, Richard J. Mitchell. I was present at the marriage ceremony. My P.O. address is Mineral Point, Iowa Co, Wis.” I further declare that I have no interest in said claim and am not concerned in its prosecution. Jane C. Matthews, her mark.
