He found it difficult to work a full day's work according to his Invalid Pension Application papers. “That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty at Columbus, in the state of Kentucky on or about the __ day of July, 1863, he contracted chronic diarrhea and rheumatism by being exposed in damp and cold weather without shelter, which disease continued during the remainder of his time in the service and has continued ever since. That he was treated in hospital as follows: at Columbus Kentucky in July 1863 for about 3 or 4 weeks.” His neighbors swore in affidavits that his disabilities were not the results of vicious habits; that he was of a quiet nature: Neighbors’ Affidavit-“William Berryman and James Mitchell-That they have been well and personally acquainted with ELISHA TYRER for 37 years and 37 years respectively, and that the claimant, ELISHA TYRER resided within ½ mile of affiants for about 12 or 15 years prior to 1887, when he, claimant, moved away to the northern part of the state to live. That claimant remained away for about two years [another affidavit says it was Woods County, WI] and then returned to the same house to live. That he moved to Dodgeville City to live last spring. That they, affiants, have worked with claimant at various times during the last ten years and prior to the time of his moving away. That they have frequently heard claimant complain of being troubled with chronic diarrhea and rheumatism. That they know that claimant is affected with rheumatism because he has frequently complained to them when working with them. That they believe claimant to be at least ½ disabled by reason of said disabilities. That said disabilities are not due to any vicious habit of claimant.” December 28, 1890.
