The spring and summer was spent in protecting provision trains, the town and surrounding countryside from the depredations of guerillas, which were very numerous and exceedingly troublesome about that time.” “On the 24th of September 1863, it (the 31st Regiment) left Columbus, arriving at Nashville Tenn. on the 27th. Left Nashville Oct.5, and marched to Lavergne, on the Nashville and Chattanooga railroad. On the 25th, marched to Murfreesboro." Nov. 1863, from a correspondent, "Murfreesboro is about the size of Dodgeville, though more compactly built and with more elegant buildings. It has been a very pretty place, and is so still, although it’s beauty is sadly marred by the ravages of war. This place is strongly fortified, more so than Nashville. The 22nd and 31st Wis. are all the infantry here at present, and picket duty is rather heavy, the boys are coming on every other day; but we are required to keep a vigilant watch as Forrest has been prowling around here lately. Three companies of our Regiment have been detailed to guard a bridge two miles and a half below here. The election took place yesterday, giving a heavy Union majority. Co. "C" cast a heavy Democratic vote of one! Union votes 42, total 43. The health of the regiment is improving rapidly as we have excellent water close to camp. "On the 14th of April the regiment was divided into detachments which were stationed at various points on the Nashville and Chattanooga railroad, from Normandy to Murfreesboro, a distance of 30 miles...June 5, the Regiment was ordered to Murfreesboro, arriving June 8th, and pressed forward to garrison duty at that Post. On the 3rd of July, they were transferred to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th AC Left Nashville July 16, and went to Marietta, GA, by rail, from which place they marched, joining the Brigade on the 21st, in its position on the south side of the Chattahoochie River, in the trenches before Atlanta. They were constantly under fire, and engaged in siege and fatigue duty until August 25, when they moved on to the crossing of the Chattahootchie. They retained this position until the evacuation of Atlanta by the enemy, when, on the 4th of September, they marched into the city.” “Left Atlanta Nov. 15, and reached Fort Harrison Dec. 9, 1864, when the 61st Ohio and 31st were ordered to charge and take the works which was done admirable, reached the outposts of Savannah, Dec.10, 1864. Left Savannah Jan. 17, were engaged at Averasboro March 16, and at Bentonville March 19. Marched to Goldsboro March 24, and were engaged there April 15; arrived at Washington May 24, and at Madison, June 23, 1865."
