It reads, "My son, George Holmes, left me without my knowledge or consent, taking with him a light grey mare of mine, against the purchase of which all persons are hereby cautioned, as he has no authority from me to sell her. He had on a straw hat, checked shirt, a light colored vest, and drab cord pantaloons; he is about 14 years of age, has a reddish fresh appearance in the face, and brown hair. My boys have been in the habit of running away under the pretence of hunting cattle. I never send my boys further to hunt the cattle than that they can return again by night. Whoever will give me any information of the said boy and mare, will be liberally rewarded. Mineral Point, Aug.28. THOS. HOLMES." Additional Comments: I believe it was the same George Holmes who eventually became a sheriff of Iowa County.
