RIDGEWAY -Palmer F. Dietzman, age 74, of Ridgeway, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at his home. He was born on Jan. 4, 1930, a son of the late Ray and Esther (Olson) Dietzman. He graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1947, and married Genevieve Paull on Aug. 5, 1950. She preceded him in death in 1964. In April of 1951, Palmer entered the military, serving as a mechanic in the U.S. Army's First Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas until April, 1953. Palmer owned and operated Dietzman's Texaco in Ridgeway for 25 years and also drove school bus for the Ridgeway and Dodgeville schools. On Nov. 27, 1965, Palmer married Betty Cleary Short. Together they operated the Ridge Coin Laundry. He began working at the State of Wisconsin Physical Plant in 1977, retiring in 1989, due to health problems. Palmer was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church, the Ridgeway American Legion Post No. 257 and served many years on the Ridgeway Village Board, the Ridgeway Fire Department and the Ridgeway Advancement Association. His favorite pastime was fishing and especially the times he took his grandchildren with him. As a young man, he was an avid baseball player and in later years he greatly enjoyed following the Ridgeway Home Talent team. He also loved watching Brewer, Badger and Packer games. Palmer is survived by his wife, Betty; his children; and grandchildren, Jeff (Alice) Dietzman of Sun Prairie, and their children, Heather, Erin, Courtney, Justin, Corey and Amber, Dan Dietzman of Madison, Kim (Glori) Dietzman of Madison, and their children, Genevieve, Ryan, Logan and step-grandchildren, Tia, Brice and Brett Sabin, Rick Short (Maria Kirch) of Ridgeway, Vicky (Terry) Halverson of Verona, and their children, Acalia and Camden, Mike Short of Madison, and Renae (Rob) Stafslien of Sun Prairie, and their children, Bayley, Noelle and Jack; his brothers, Ray (Isabelle) Dietzman of Milwaukee, and Rodney (Barbara) Dietzman of Markesan; his sister, Ruth Bahr of Avoca; his mother-in-law, Marjorie Cleary of Oregon; his brother-in-law, Bruno Cenite of Mineral Point. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Genevieve; his parents; his brother, Roscoe; his sister, Delores (Joanne) Cenite; and his brother-in-law, Giles Bahr; and his daughter-in-law, Rita Short. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at ST. BRIDGET'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Ridgeway. Father Donald Lange will officiate. Burial will be held in St. Bridget's Cemetery with military graveside rites accorded by the Beckett-Kurth American Legion Post No. 257. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the GORGEN-MCGINLEY AND AYERS FUNERAL HOME in Dodgeville, and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Saturday at the church. The family would like to thank the Upland Hills Hospice Care staff, especially Rita Stanton, for their compassionate care of Palmer. Thanks also to Dr. Bernard Micke. The children would like to express their gratitude to Mom for her loving care these past several months, which enabled Palmer to remain at home as he wished.
