"Joe" RIDGEWAY - Joseph W. "Joe" Murphy, age 90, of Ridgeway, died peacefully at home on Thursday, May 4, 2006, after a short illness. He was born on April 1, 1916, in Dodgeville, the son of Michael and Clara (Convey) Murphy. He was a graduate of Dodgeville High School in 1933 and Madison Business College in 1936. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Prince William from 1943 until 1946. Joseph was united in marriage with Agnes Cullen on Sept. 17, 1946, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Cuba City. Joseph was employed at the Ridgeway Implement Business for several years and was a longtime office manager of Collins & Hying in Dodgeville. He served in the Navy C.B. Reserve for 20 years as chief petty officer. He was a member of the Ridgeway American Legion Post No. 257, the V.F.W. and Iowa County 40et8. He served as the Ridgeway Town Clerk and on the Ridgeway School Board. He was a longtime member of the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department. Joe was an avid gardener and many enjoyed the fruits of his labor. He was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church of Ridgeway. Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Agnes; his daughter, JoAnne Murphy of Ridgeway; his sons, Michael (Milagra) Murphy of Merritt Island, Fla., James (Kay) Murphy of Janesville, Thomas (Kathryn) Murphy of Cross Plains, Mark (Terry) Murphy of Jupiter, Fla., Patrick (Joyce) Murphy of Minneapolis and Edward (Lori) Murphy of Dodgeville; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary (Jim) McFadzean of Wilmette, Ill.; his brother, Michael Francis (Lucille) Murphy of Hartland, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Alice (Harry) Majewski; and granddaughter, Ellen Murphy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2006, at ST. BRIDGET'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Ridgeway. Father Tait Schroeder will officiate. Inurnment will be held in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2006, where a parish rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and also from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Monday, May 8, 2006, at the church. Military rites will be accorded by the Beckett-Kurth American Legion No. 257 from Ridgeway. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Ridgeway or the Ridgeway American Legion.
