SHELTON." SHELTON, Johanna Died 11Nov1862 "Aged 35 yrs" "Dau of T. & J. SHELTON." From the Dodgeville Chronicle, Dodgeville, Iowa Co., Wi. 24 Jan 1868 The front page. Frozen to death-On wednesday of last week, a young man by the name of John Shelton, aged 28 years, who resided in the town of Clyde, was in Dodgeville. he started for his home in the team of a friend who was going within four miles of where he lived, between four and five o'clock in the evening. THe weather was very cold, and he got out of the sleigh several times and walked to keep from getting chilled/ When he arrived within four miles of his house, his friend took another road, and he got out to walk the balance of the way. He had with him a pail containing groceries &c., and appeared perfectly well. Nothing more was seen or heard of him until the next morning when he was found within one mile of his home, and within a quarter of a mile of a neighbor's, almost frozen to death. From the tracks in the snow it was plain to be seen that he had fallen several times, and finally been unable to walk at all, and had crawled on his hands and knees, dragging the pail after him for quite a distance. He was taken to a house and recieved every attention, but to no purpose. He died at seven o'clock in the evening, without having been restored to consciousness. When he was found, his watch was missing,(it is advertised elsewhere in this paper.) He was a steady, industrious man, and much respected by those who knew him.
