NEWELL, real estate agent and Secretary and Superintendent of the Kenosha Milk-Pan Co. Mr. Newell's father, Hon. Theodore Newell, was a native of Bristol, Ct.; he located the first town site of Muskegon, Mich., in 1836; he brought his family to Detroit first, then in the fall of 1837, removed to Muskegon; he erected the first steam saw-mill at that point, and retained an interest in the lumber business there until 1860, although he removed to Kenosha in 1841, and resided here until 1857, when he removed with his family to New Haven, Conn., and remained until 1863, then came to Chicago and died there Oct. 30, 1869. His widow survives him, and is now a resident of Kenosha; she was born at Stockbridge, Mass. Octavius was born in Detroit, Mich., May 24, 1837; he was educated at Yale College. Previous to the war, he was engaged in the produce commission business, in Chicago; when the war broke out, he entered the service as clerk in the Quartermaster's Department, with Baxter, Chief Quartermaster of Gen. Grant's staff; was with him about two years, when Baxter resigned. Then returned to Chicago and was engaged in lumber business with his father until his death in 1869; came to Kenosha in November, 1871. Married Mary O. Jones, daughter of Daniel A. Jones, of Chicago; date of marriage, Nov. 6, 1866.
