Owen O'Hare, former chief of police on the Kenosha police department, and one of the most widely known among the citizens of the city, died suddenly in Norristown, N.J., last night at the age of 69. Word of his death reached Kenosha by telegram. No details of his death were given. He had gone to Norristown last June to spend a short vacation with relatives in that city. He liked it so well that he stayed on. Only last week he had sent postcards home to several of his friends in Kenosha. On one of these cards he had written "I hope you're doing all you can for Al Smith," and he left a word of cheer. Born in Ireland Wherever he had gone, he left a world of friends, and during his administration as chief of police in Kenosha he established a reputation for his work that was carried throughout the state and the middle west. Owen O'Hare was born in County Down, Ireland, on April 6, 1869, a son of Patrick and Ella Craney O'Hare. The father died just before Owen was born, and the mother brought her little family to the United States in 1873. At that time Owen had a sister, Annie. The family home was established at Seneca Falls, N.Y. The son was educated in the public schools at Auburn, N.Y., and at the age of 24 came to Kenosha, where he entered the employ of the late E.J. English, proprietor of a meat market. Joins Police Force On December 31, 1892, Owen O'Hare became a patrolman on the department here. For two years he was a merchant policeman, and for seven years he was a patrolman. In 1898 Mayor James Gorman appointed O'Hare chief of police, and successive mayors renewed the appointment until the department was placed under civil service regulations. From that time until June 1, 1906, he was a patrolman again, and on that date he became chief of police. He held office until 1921 when he was succeeded by Chief Thad W. Logan when the city government changed from the aldermanic form to the city manager form. Septermber 1, 1890, Mr. O'Hare married Miss Ella Ward, and two children were born to this union, George and Helen. Helen O'Hare married Frank Rafferty, and the two children survive him. Mrs. Owen O'Hare died three years ago. Funeral Arrangements Later In the last few years the health of the former police chief had been failing, and for a time he went away to a sanitarium where he regained his strength. For a long period he worked in Kenosha, later retired on his pension from the police department, voted him at the completion of twenty-two years of service. Mr. O'Hare and his family are members of the St. James Church in Kenosha, and he was identified with many fraternal organizations in Kenosha, including the Knights of Columbus, Order of Foresters, the Elks, Eagles, and the Modern Woodmen. No details of the funeral arrangements were definite this afternoon and these are expected to be completed on Wednesday.
