Hugh Rafferty, Sr., for more than seventy years a resident of Kenosha county, died just after four o'clock Tuesday afternoon at his home at 509 Prairie avenue at the age of seventy-four years. The deceased had been in failing health for several years and had been seriously ill for the past eight months and for this reason death was not entirely unexpected. Hugh Rafferty was born November 8, 1884, (sic) in New Jersey, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rafferty, two of the earliest settlers in the town of Brighton. When two years old he came with his parents to the town of Brighton where he lived for more than sixty years, and where he was one of the best known and progressive farmers of that vicinity. About ten years ago he retired and since that time he has made his home in Kenosha. On October 18, 1876, at the St. Alphonse Church in the town of New Munster he was married to Miss Bridget Pennefeather and to this happy union seven children were born, all of whom with the widow survive the deceased. The surviving children are: Mrs. J.T. Gorman, of Kansasville; Mrs. B.F. Stahl, of Kenosha; Henry Rafferty, of Darien, Wisconsin; Mrs. W.B. Riley, of Cleveland; and Frank, Hugh and Miss Kathleen Rafferty of Kenosha. He is also survived by one sister, Miss Margaret Rafferty of Burlington, and by eleven grandchildren. His death likewise comes as a personal sorrow to his many friends in Kenosha county who knew him as a man of sterling character and a true friend. The funeral services will be held on Friday morning at ten o'clock at the St. James Church after which interment will be made in the family plot at the St. James cemetery.
