He was born in Brunswick, Germany, in 1842, son of Ludwig Ahrens; came to the United States in 1864, and has resided in La Crosse since that time. He is a wagon-maker by trade, and worked at that business in La Crosse till 1870. He was married in 1871, to Catharine Bey, and has four children - Henry, Lizzie, Carl and Katrina.
