BLACK, farmer, Sec. 27; P. O. Holmen; was born in Norway, Oct. 10, 1819. Came to America in 1850; settled in Dane Co., Wis., where he worked in a saw-mill for two years; this was at the village of Christiana. He then came to La Crosse, where he was in a mill. He then bought 40 acres, on which he built the old cabin and improved the place. He now owns 200 acres, with a fine house, 24x16, with wing 24x24, wind-mill, etc. His wife, Johanna Gilbrenson, was born in Norway, April 22, 1821. They were married in 1847. They have had twelve children - Ole, Gillen, Carl, Anna, Bertinia, Anton, Fredricka, Johanna, (now Mrs. Olseth), Martha, Mariah, Bertha and Martin. In politics, Republican; in religion, Lutheran.
