He was a sailor, and was engaged in that business and steamboating till the spring of 1857, making his home in St. Louis, Mo., up to that time. Since that he has been in the grocery business in La Crosse, and has never had a partner, having been in that business without change the longest of any man in the city. He was married, in St. Louis, to Miss Eliza Hopkins, a native of Germany, and has two children; George is living in Madison, Wis., and his daughter, Elizabeth, is the wife of J.
