E. S. GATES, cooper, has been a resident of La Crosse since 1876. He was born 
in Chautauqua Co., N. Y., 1853, son of C. L. Gates, who died in New York in 
1856. Mr. Gates went to Clinton, Iowa, where he learned his trade and remained 
three years; then traveled till 1876, when he settled in La Crosse. He was 
married in 1878, to Miss Maggie Walker, daughter of Peter Walker, who came to 
La Crosse in 1859, and was in a grocery store. They have one child - George.
