For a period of fifteen years - from 1832 to 1857 - he was in the drug business in Aberdeen, Scotland, when he emigrated to America; came to La Crosse in the spring of 1858, going into the grocery business. In the fall he joined a Mr. Morse in opening up a liquor business, which has grown from a beginning of $10,000 to $100,000 a year.
