JOHNSON, farmer; P. O. La Crosse; was born in Vermont in 1830; in 1849, he went to Boston, where he served as clerk in a hotel and store until 1853, when he removed to Galena, Ill., where he again clerked in a store until 1857; he then went to Lake City where he engaged in mercantile business until 1858, when he went to Iowa City and took charge of a store until 1861; he then returned to Galena, Ill., and commenced steamboating, which business he followed for eight years; in 1868, he quit river life and commenced farming, which business he has since followed. In 1857, was married to Martha E. Hardon, who was born July 9, 1829; they have had three children, two of whom are living - Elsa Ana, born March 19, 1861; Abba Louisa, Feb. 14, 1873.
