LEWIS, farmer, Sec. 14; P. O. West Salem; born in Indiana, December, 1841; his father died in Indiana; he came to Green Co., Wis., with his mother, when he was a child. He first came to La Crosse Co. when a lad, and worked for a time for Mr. McClintock, an early settler of La Crosse Co., also for Mr. Charles Cross, another early settler; he afterward returned to Green Co. He enlisted in 1861 in the 8th W. V. I., and served three years. Mr. Lewis was a brave and faithful soldier, and, with his regiment, participated in many of the most important campaigns and battles of the war, among which was the second day at Shiloh, battle of Corinth and Iuka, the siege of Vicksburg; was in Banks' disastrous Louisiana campaign, etc. He came to La Crosse Co. after the expiration of his term of service; he settled on the farm where he now lives; in 1868, he was married to Prudence Dunlap, a daughter of Samuel Dunlap; has two children - Arthur A. and George S. The father of Mrs. Lewis, Mr. Samuel Dunlap, was born in Virginia, removed with his parents to Ohio when he was a child, where he was married to Elizabeth A. Barrett; they came to Green Co., Wis., at an early day, and were early settlers of La Crosse Co. Mrs. Dunlap died June 9, 1880; Mr. Dunlap resides at his homestead on Section 26; have ten children - six sons and four daughters; two sons and one daughter live in Kansas, the others reside in La Crosse Co.
