He was engaged in clerking for several years; lived, the first summer after he came to this country, in Vernon County; was clerk for Veits & Clark, West Salem, from the spring of 1868 till the fall of 1870. He then, with Mr. John Grun, purchased the stock of this firm; continued in business for two and a half years; then went to La Crosse and engaged in clerking, first for Knutson, afterward for the firm of Steinam & Elson, Marcus Anderson, and also for Mons Anderson about four years; afterward for Gutman Brothers; returned to Salem in the spring of 1876; engaged in the hotel business in March, 1880.
