Mr. McEldowney was one of the early settlers of the town of Hamilton; he was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1800. He emigrated to Pennsylvania when a young man, and located in Crawford Co., where he lived till 1851, when he came to La Fayette Co. with his family; he settled in the town of Hamilton, La Crosse Co., the following year - 1852, where he resided till his death, which occurred Jan. 7, 1879. He was married in Pennsylvania to Mary Cunningham, a native of that State; she died September, 1867. Mr. McEldowney had nine children - four sons and five daughters; three sons and two daughters are still living. The sons, James, William and Samuel A., are prominent farmers of this town. James resides in Section 27; was born in Pennsylvania in 1827; his wife was Elizabeth Feak; she died in 1876; has four children - Martin, Mary, Cora and Lizzie; has 210 acres of land, with fine improvements. William F., born in Pennsylvania May 23, 1831; resides in Section 22; farm contains 350 acres; his wife was Elizabeth B. McKinley, daughter of William McKinley; they have one daughter, Nannie J., born in 1859. Samuel A., youngest son, owns the homestead; his wife was Miss Rachel Francis, native of Canada; they have two boys - William and James; this farm his father purchased in 1851; he has now 210 acres, with excellent improvements.
