His father, Gottfried Rau, died in Germany in 1868. Carl was educated in his native place, and came to the United States in 1872. He lived in Dubuque, Iowa, till the fall of 1878, since which time he has resided in La Crosse, where his mother, who came to the United States with him, also resides. The first two years of his residence in La Crosse, he was connected with the mercantile agency of R. C. Dun & Co., and has been in his present position since May, 1880.
