He lived in Philadelphia, Penn., two years, and in Wilmington, Del., eleven years; was in the butchering business in both places; he then went to Newark, N. J., and was in the saloon business twelve years, and came to La Crosse in 1866, where he has followed the same business up to the present time. Mr. Rupp has had four children, three of them still living. His oldest son, George Martin, enlisted in June, 1861, in the 7th N. J. V. I., and was killed in battle near Petersburg, Va., on the 7th day of May, 1864; his second son, John, was also in the army, three months in the 3d N. J. V. I., and one year in another regiment.
