CHARLES E. SHAFT, farmer and stock buyer; born in Rochester, N. Y., Oct. 31, 
1832; son of William R. Shaft, a native of Madison Co., N. Y. Charles E. came 
to Sheboygan in 1847; thence to Walworth Co., and with his father engaged in 
the milling business; afterward followed the lakes for several years. He was 
married to Elizabeth Owens; she was born in Wales in 1843; they have four 
children - Alice, William, Emery and Myrta; lost two children. He has been 
variously engaged in farming, milling, etc.; came to La Crosse in 1861; his 
father came to La Crosse at the same time, where his mother died; his father 
returned to Walworth Co., where he died. Mr. Shaft has about 120 acres of 
land; has been engaged for many years in stock buying.
